High School Volunteers
Volunteering as a High School Student is a great opportunity to gain experience, get class/program credit, build your resume, add to your college application, learn new skills and meet new people. Our program offers exposure in the hospital and medical office setting for those thinking about pursuing professional careers, military, world of work or technical programs.
Volunteering is more than just getting a valuable experience but also about giving back to your community. Many of our students comment after their volunteer time that they were thankful for their volunteer experience and could not have expected the impact it made on them long after they had left. Our students also bring a fresh perspective and enthusiasm to the hospital that make our program a fun place to be! High School applicants may only volunteer in either the hospital or ambulatory (clinic) program. Please only apply to one.
Recommended Minimum Commitment Requirements
Our high school volunteer program requires a minimum commitment of 50 hours in 6 months on a weekly basis of at least two hours a week. You may wish to continue volunteering past your commitment. In that case, we would be happy to have you. We have many volunteers who stay with us past their minimum commitment.
How to become a VOLUNTEER
Step 1
COMPLETE VOLUNTEER APPLICATION
Fill out the online application below according to your facility: either Westside Medical Center in Hillsboro, OR, or Sunnyside Medical Center in Clackamas, OR. *All volunteers must have an email that is regularly checked.
Step 6
New volunteer orientation (NVO)
You will participate in a New Volunteer Orientation via Zoom. We will discuss important information needed to help you be successful with volunteering. We schedule your volunteer assignment and a hospital safety tour at this meeting, so please have your schedule available.
Step 2
Required forms
After reviewing your application, a parent permission document will be sent via email. High school students are required to provide us with an unofficial transcript. If we need a letter of recommendation we will contact you directly.
Step 7
NVO Documents
Throughout the onboarding process you will receive notification of documents to sign. These forms are required and must be signed before the hospital safety tour.
Step 3
Pre-interview compliance trainings
Your application and availability will be reviewed. We review for completeness, volunteer availability, and determine if this is a fit for our program. If it is a fit, we will email you a link to complete necessary pre-interview compliance trainings. After reviewing each training, you will be asked to complete an attestation. This lets us know you have completed and understand the trainings.
Step 8
Safety Tour
Once required NVO documents have been received by Volunteer Services, we will proceed with your schedule safety tour of the hospital.
Step 4
Participate in an interview
Once your trainings are complete, we will reach out to schedule either a phone or group interview via Zoom. Further information will be provided about our program and next steps at the interview.
Step 9
Service Area Training + First Day
Training with the unit will be scheduled. Your first day will then be the next week following your training date. Please allow for flexibility in your training date.
Step 5
Background Check + Health screenings
Kaiser Permanente requires all volunteers to complete a health screening. If you are 18 or older, you must also have a background check. Applicants must have a valid SSN. You will receive an email from our background vendor, First Advantage with the additional information they need to process this for you.
